About this piece
New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island together, an original color-printed map of c.1888 by Rand, McNally & Co. The running head reads "Rand, McNally & Co.'s New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island" between atlas page numbers 40 and 41. The waters are tinted pale blue, and the coastlines and provinces are outlined.
The three provinces are drawn in full, with the Bay of Fundy between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, the Gulf of St. Lawrence to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the south and east. Cape Breton Island is lettered at the right, and Prince Edward Island lies in the Gulf at the center. The Magdalen Islands appear in the upper right, with the western tip of Newfoundland beyond. Railroad lines are shown across the three provinces, and a key at the lower left distinguishes completed railroads from proposed ones.
The sheet gives a good view of the Maritime provinces of Canada, a generation after Confederation in 1867.
