About this piece

The chief of the Botocudos, Kerengnatnuck, and his family, an original copper engraving of c.1820 engraved by D. Veelwaard, with the Dutch title "Het Opperhoofd der Botocoedos Kerengnatnuck en zyn gezin" and a page reference to the book it came from at the lower right.

The Botocudo were a people of the forests of what is now the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais and neighboring regions. The engraving shows the chief walking at the left, carrying a bundle of arrows and a bow over one shoulder, followed by his wife, who carries a large bundle and a child on her shoulders, and by a second child holding on to her hand. Both adults wear the large wooden plugs in lip and ears for which the Botocudo were named by the Portuguese. Palms and an agave rise around them, and a river and distant woods lie behind. The soft shading and the crisp line work are characteristic of early nineteenth-century Dutch travel illustration.

The source work is not named on the sheet beyond the page number, and the print was issued in the Netherlands for readers of travel accounts of Brazil.
