About this piece

The entrance to the Strait of Magellan and the coast of Tierra del Fuego, with the ships of Anson's squadron, an original copper engraving from the Dutch edition of George Anson's voyage, Reize rondsom de Werreld, published in 1749. The upper view is lettered "Kaap Sint Maria aan 't begin van de Straat Magellaan" and the lower "Een gedeelte der N.O. zyde van Tierra del Fuego aan het inkomen van de Straat Le Maire."

Each panel is a long horizontal profile of the coast, with the sailing ships drawn in a line across the middle distance. In the upper panel a low shoreline lies beyond seven ships, which are shown with their sails set, and in the lower panel a row of five or six ships passes in front of a chain of low hills and rocky peaks. The skies are filled with detailed cloud forms.

Anson's squadron of six ships sailed from England in 1740 and passed the Strait of Le Maire in the following year, in a long and difficult run toward Cape Horn. This sheet records the arrival at the southern tip of the continent.
