About this piece
A pastoral view of Orange County, New York, an original steel engraving with light color after a painting by Worthington Whittredge, engraved by C. Rost and published in New York in 1869 in the series Gallery of Landscape Painters, American Scenery. The plate title "On the Meadows, Orange Co. N.Y." is engraved beneath the image.
Cattle stand and drink at the edge of a still pond in the foreground, their forms mirrored in the water, and a lone figure walks the bank at the left. Tall spreading elms and other trees fill the middle distance, with a farmhouse and low fields beyond them under a wide, softly clouded sky. The tinting is restrained, a pale wash of greens and warm browns over the engraved line.
Whittredge was a leading painter of the Hudson River School, known for quiet, open landscapes in which light and space matter more than incident. This plate belongs to that contemplative strand of American landscape painting, translated into the tonal range that steel engraving allowed.
