About this piece

Western Ontario in c.1888, an original map by Rand, McNally & Co. printed in black on toned paper with railroad lines overprinted in red and blue. The sheet is headed "Rand, McNally & Co.'s Ontario No. 1" in the right margin, with atlas page numbers 56 and 57.

The southwestern peninsula of the province fills the sheet, bounded by Lake Huron and Georgian Bay on the north and west, Lake Erie to the south and Lake Ontario at the lower right. Railroad lines run in close networks across the peninsula and along the lake shores, with lines running to the American border at the lower left and Detroit. Lake Simcoe and the Muskoka district lie at the upper right. The counties and townships are densely lettered, and the north shore of Georgian Bay is a country of lakes with few settlements.

The sheet is the western of two Ontario plates in the atlas and covers the most densely settled and developed part of the province.
