About this piece
Uruguay as an original pen-and-ink map by the Dutch artist Charles Burki (1909-1994), signed and dated "Charles Burki 48" at the lower right. The old description associates it with a Liebig Extract of Meat Company commission, and the product imagery on the sheet fits that.
The country sits at the center in fine linework, with sunburst rays radiating behind it. Montevideo, Colonia, Mercedes, Paysandu, Salto, Durazno, Florida, Minas, Maldonado and Rocha are marked, with railroads, the Rio Negro, the Rio de la Plata, and the neighbors Argentina, Brazil ("Brazilie") and Paraguay lettered in Dutch. Large illustrations frame the map: a cow's head among stalks of wheat at the upper left, a Merino ram at the upper right, an ear of maize, a tin marked "Beef" and a bottle of Aroma Liebig along the bottom. A list down the left side names the exports (meat, hides, wool, meat extract, wheat, tobacco, maize, gold, silver, copper and manganese) and gives the area as 86,900 square kilometers, with a note on the Portuguese and Spanish settlers and the Indians. Small aircraft cross the sheet. The title "URUGUAY" appears in a black band at the foot with a scale in kilometers.
Burki was born in the Dutch East Indies and worked as an illustrator in the Netherlands after the war.
