About this piece
The meeting of Spaniards and Incas, an original steel engraving titled "Spaniards & Peruvians", engraved by W. Greatbach after the painting by H.P. Briggs, R.A., and published in London by H. Wilkinson, dated about 1827. The lettering beneath the image reads "From the picture in the Vernon Gallery", with the painter's and engraver's names at the lower corners.
An Inca noble in a feathered headdress and spotted tunic stands at the center, arms folded in front of him, facing a friar in a dark habit who holds a book. At the right are armored Spaniards in plumed hats and helmets, among them the figure traditionally identified as Francisco Pizarro. In the foreground a kneeling figure in a heavy cloak seen from behind faces the Inca, and at the left women and attendants cluster together, one with arms raised. A palm overhangs the group at the top left, and a banner rises over the soldiers. The subject is the first interview between the Spaniards and the Peruvians, the encounter that opened the conquest of the Inca Empire.
Henry Perronet Briggs (1791 to 1844) was a leading British historical painter and Royal Academician. His picture was shown at the Royal Academy in 1827.
