About this piece
A general map of western and southern South America, titled "Carte générale du Pérou, de la Bolivie, du Chili et de la Plata," drawn by A. Brué and revised by E. Levasseur, from Levasseur's Atlas de Géographie Moderne Physique et Politique, published in 1875. The sheet is an engraved map with outline color, in a decorative chain-pattern border.
The sheet shows the Pacific coast from northern Peru down to southern Chile, with the Andes chain close to the shore, and the countries of the River Plate to the east. Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay and the Argentine Republic are tinted in different colors, and the southern edge of Brazil appears at the right. Rivers, towns and the main routes across the pampas are laid down, and the "Grand Océan" and "Océan Atlantique" are lettered at the margins. A colored key at left identifies the republics. The title and the imprint of Ch. Delagrave, Institut Géographique de Paris, appear at the lower left.
The map gives a picture of the central and southern Andean republics at the time of the 1870s.
