About this piece
Peru and the surrounding region on an original antique map titled "Carte du Perou", drawn by Ambroise Tardieu and dated 1821 in its cartouche, made for the "Histoire generale des Voyages de Laharpe". The sheet is an engraving with outline color dividing the provinces and territories.
The map runs from the Pacific coast, where the Gulf of Guayaquil lies at the upper left, across the Andes to the Amazon basin. The coastline is shaded and lettered with ports and capes, and the river systems and mountain ranges of the interior are drawn in excellent detail. Colored lines mark the divisions of the viceroyalty and its neighbors, with the "Territoire des Missions du Pays des Amazones" in the north, Bresil to the east, and the provinces of Los Charcas, Cuzco and the Chaco named toward the south and southeast. The title is lettered in a flourished cartouche at the left, with scale bars of French leagues and nautical miles beneath it.
Ambroise Tardieu (1788 to 1841) was an eminent French cartographer and engraver, celebrated for his version of John Arrowsmith's 1806 map of the United States. He came from a family of fine engravers and was appointed geographical engraver to the French government.
