About this piece
Mission Sion, a view from Eduard Poeppig's travels in South America, an original lithograph published in Leipzig in 1834 from the account of his journeys in Chile, Peru and on the Amazon between 1826 and 1832. The plate is lettered "Mission Sion." in the lower margin, with the artist's credit and the lithographer's imprint at either side. The sheet is printed in black on tinted stone.
The mission stands in a clearing in forest country. A large wooden cross rises at the left beside a long, gabled building that serves as the church, and low thatched houses are scattered across the open ground behind it. A palm leans into the foreground at the left, and a family, with a man carrying a load on his back, walks across the front of the scene. Wooded slopes rise behind the houses and ranges of mountains close the horizon.
Poeppig was a German naturalist who published his Reise in Chile, Peru und auf dem Amazonenstrome with an atlas of lithographed views drawn from his own sketches.
