About this piece
The Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires, a hand-colored aquatint with etched outlines from Giulio Ferrario's Il Costume Antico e Moderno (Le Costume Ancien et Moderne), Volume II, plate 2. The first issue was published in Milan in 17 volumes between about 1815 and 1826, and the Italian volume carries the date 1821. The sheet is a landscape format, with the engraver's signature at the lower left.
The view is framed by the dark inside of a vaulted arch, through which the plaza opens in a pale, hazy light. In the middle of the square stands a white pyramid, the monument in the Plaza de Mayo, with an arcaded building with a bell tower beside it at the left and a long, low house behind. At the right a domed church rises above a plain wall. In the shadow of the arch in the foreground a man leads three mules, two of them loaded with bundles and baskets, and a woman in red and a vendor with goods appear beyond.
The scene shows the main square of the city in the years just after independence.
