About this piece

Four Botocudo men from eastern Brazil in an original lithograph credited to Karl Joseph Brodtmann, 1836. The plate is numbered "Pl. 11" at the upper right and titled "Botocudo's" below the group, with the draftsman's and lithographer's credits small in the lower margin. It is printed in black and gray tones on cream paper.

Four head studies fill the sheet, each seen in profile or three-quarter view. At the upper left a man looks to the right with a large round ear disc and a lip plug. At the upper right a man seen nearly full face wears a very large plug in the lower lip and enlarged ear ornaments. At the lower left, a man with his lip pushed out around his tongue wears a big circular ear plug and a cord around his neck. At the lower right a man in profile faces left with a similar ear disc. All four have their hair cut in a short fringe over the forehead, with the sides closely trimmed.

The Botocudo took their name from the botoques, the lip and ear plugs which the Portuguese noted in them, and the lithograph concentrates on these ornaments, drawn in careful crayon shading against the bare paper.
