About this piece
A procession before the church of Santo Domingo in Buenos Aires, an original steel engraving printed in Paris in the 1860s. The plate is lettered "Santo Domingo à Buenos-Ayres", drawn by Lebreton and engraved by Ferdinand Delannoy, with the printer's line of Chardon.
The church stands at the end of a street, its plain façade topped by a tall bell tower and a dome, with a balconied house in the left foreground. In the street, a group of men and musicians, one playing a cello, carry a statue of a standing figure with a radiating halo on a platform, and a crowd follows. Heavy clouds fill the sky.
The Dominican convent and church of Santo Domingo were among the city's colonial landmarks. The plate belongs to a series of South American views published around 1867, made for a European readership.
