About this piece
A set of ten engraved sheets on the peoples, objects and monuments of South America, from the Iconographic Encyclopaedia of the Arts and Sciences, the work of Johann Georg Heck as revised and edited for American use by Daniel Brinton. Each sheet is headed "Americans" with a plate number and numbered captions beneath the images.
The plates are a survey of South American subjects drawn from the Andes to the lowlands. Several are given to ancient remains: carved heads and idols, pottery, skulls, a stepped platform and a masonry gateway, and a figure in a ceremonial tunic. Others show the living peoples, with portraits of men and women with painted or tattooed faces, groups of figures in feathered dress, a canoe, hammocks, weapons and domestic objects. Two larger scenes show a line of dancing figures and a mounted lance fight on open ground, while one sheet has men in ponchos and wide hats beside a thatched village. All are engraved in black and white on toned paper with numbered captions.
Together they present the continent's peoples as encyclopedic illustration of the nineteenth century presented them.
