About this piece
South America in a single sheet, titled "Zuid-Amerika" and published at Leiden by D. Noothoven van Goor in 1876 for the Nieuwe Hand-Atlas der Aarde. It is an original engraved atlas map with outline hand color.
The continent is shown with its republics in contrasting border colors: Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina and the Guianas. Rivers such as the Amazon and Madeira cross the largely empty interior, the Andes are shown in fine hachures along the Pacific coast, and the Pacific and Atlantic are lettered in Dutch ("Groote Oceaan of Stille Zee", "Atlantische Oceaan"). Several insets sit around the main map: a plan of Paramaribo and a map of the Suriname river area at the top and right, an enlarged inset of the bay of Rio de Janeiro at the lower right, a plan of Valparaiso at the lower left, and a map of the Isthmus of Panama at the top. The title cartouche at the lower right carries the imprint.
In 1876 Brazil was still an empire, and the map shows the large frontier regions of Patagonia and the Amazon basin that were not yet precisely surveyed.
