About this piece
The town of St. Joseph on the Missouri River, an original steel engraving of about 1850 with the plate title "St Joseph, Missouri". The sheet is printed in black on cream paper, with the publisher's small credit lines in the lower margin.
The view is taken from a wooded rise above the settlement. A large live oak at the left, hung with Spanish moss, frames the scene, and below it stand log cabins, a fence and a few figures. Beyond, the town spreads across rolling ground in close rows of houses and cross streets, with a domed building and a second large civic building at the upper right on the highest ground. A bend of the river with a small steamboat lies in the middle distance, and the far hills close the horizon under finely ruled sky.
St. Joseph, founded in the 1840s, became one of the principal starting points on the Missouri River for emigrants bound for Oregon and California, and the view shows the town as a busy outfitting center of that overland trade.
