About this piece

A river landscape in Suriname, an original lithograph from Karl Martin's Bericht uber eine Reise nach Niederlandisch West-Indien, published at Leiden by E. J. Brill in 1888. The plate is lettered "Tab. I" at the upper right and carries the printer's imprint "P. W. M. Trap, impr." at the lower right. It is printed in gray with a tint stone in warm buff, giving the sky and water a golden tone.

The view looks across a broad, calm reach of the river. A low island of rock with a few small trees stands at the center, and a long bank of forest stretches along the far shore, with tall trees on the right whose branches hang with curtains of vines down to the water. A small dugout canoe with a single paddler crosses the foreground. Bands of cloud drift across a large pale sky, and the water carries soft reflections of the shore. The old description names the island as Tafra Island.

The plate is one of a group of landscape views that Martin included to illustrate the places he passed on his expedition, beside the geological maps and fossil plates of the report.
