About this piece
Suriname, a color travel poster issued by the Suriname Tourist Bureau around 1950. The sheet is printed in bright, flat colors, with the word "suriname" set large in white lowercase letters across the foot, "South America" beneath it, and the bureau's information address, 10 Rockefeller Plaza, New York, in small type at the lower right.
The scene is a riverside village in the tropical interior. Thatched huts stand on a yellow clearing in the foreground, with villagers in small groups between them and two flags flying side by side, one of them the red, white and blue Dutch tricolor. Behind lies a broad river with rapids and a dugout canoe, and a wall of dense forest and green hills rises beyond. A bright stylized sun hangs in the sky, and a white airliner flies across it above a dotted line lettered "Chicago, New York, Miami, Paramaribo", showing the air route a visitor from North America would take.
The Dutch flag reflects Suriname's position at that date as part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
