About this piece
Western New York in c.1888, an original map by Rand, McNally & Co. printed in black on toned paper with railroad lines overprinted in red and blue. The running head "Rand, McNally & Co.'s Western New York" appears across the top between atlas page numbers 136 and 137.
The sheet covers the western part of the state from Lake Erie and Lake Ontario south to the Pennsylvania border. Buffalo lies at the eastern end of Lake Erie at the left, with the Niagara frontier and the Canadian counties of Welland and Lincoln across the river, and Toronto and Hamilton at the extreme upper left. The Finger Lakes run in long narrow bodies down the right side, and the counties of Erie, Wyoming, Monroe, Ontario, Yates, Steuben, Tompkins and Cortland are lettered across the plate. Railroad lines run in bands along the lake shore and through the southern tier.
The map shows the western end of the Erie Canal corridor and the lake ports as they were served by the railroads of the late 1880s.
