About this piece
The southern part of South America in 1857, the lower sheet of a two-sheet map of the continent, an original copper engraving with hand-colored outlines. It is titled "Der Südliche Theil von Süd-America" and was published in Gotha by Justus Perthes for Adolf Stieler's Hand-Atlas. The imprint at the foot gives Gotha and Justus Perthes, with a date that reads close to 1857.
The sheet covers Chile, Argentina and the La Plata region, Uruguay, Paraguay and southern Brazil, with Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego at the foot and the Falkland Islands in pink outline to the east. The Andes run down the western side, and rivers, capes, ports and islands are lettered along the coasts. National boundaries are tinted in yellow, green, red and blue outline.
Two insets at the lower right give closer views of Rio de Janeiro: a plan of the bay ("Bay von Rio de Janeiro") with its islands, inlets and forts, and a plan of the city, with a numbered key to its principal buildings printed beside it. A list of numbered places is given at the lower left of the main map.
Its companion sheet covers the northern part of South America. Together the two sheets record the continent as it was mapped in the 1850s.
