About this piece

Mexico, an original map from an atlas of 1882 published by Blackie & Son, with the title "Mexico" in the lower left. The map is colored in outline by state, in pink, yellow, green and buff.

The sheet shows the whole country from the peninsula of Baja California at the left to the Yucatán peninsula at the right, with the Pacific Ocean at the lower left and the Gulf of Mexico and the Bay of Campeche at the right. The Sierra Madre ranges are drawn in dense hachures, the states and territories are outlined in color and the major towns and rivers are named. At the top the map extends over the southern edge of the United States, with parts of Texas and Louisiana in yellow and the Rio Grande marking the boundary.

The sheet shows Mexico as it stood in the early 1880s, with Baja California still a single territory.
