About this piece
California and the Gulf of California, an original hand-colored copper engraving titled "Carte de la Californie, Levée par la Société des Jésuites, Dédiée au Roy d'Espagne en 1757", as lettered in the cartouche at lower left.
The map shows the Baja California peninsula as a long, narrow landmass, with the sea to its east lettered "Golfe de Californie ou Mer Rouge de Cortes". Mission sites, harbors and capes are named along both coasts and the gulf islands are drawn in detail. To the north and east the sheet reaches into the mainland, with the Colorado River flowing down to the head of the gulf and the territories of the "Yumas", "Papagos" and "Apaches" lettered across the interior. At the right edge the Spanish provinces of Sonora, Ostimuri and Sinaloa are outlined in color, and a few hills are drawn in profile. The coloring is in outline, in yellow, pink and green, with a yellow border.
The map shows the peninsula as a peninsula and not an island, following the Jesuit surveys of the region. The title credits the Jesuit order with the survey and records the dedication to the king of Spain, which place it within the missionary mapping of the Pimería and Baja California in the 1700s.
