About this piece

Mexico, from the Royal Atlas of Modern Geography, published by W. and A.K. Johnston in Edinburgh and London in 1909. The sheet is an original engraving printed in color, with the title "Mexico" set at the lower left above the scale and notes.

The map covers the whole country from Baja California to the Yucatan Peninsula, with the states outlined in different colors and the mountains of the Sierra Madre drawn in dense hachures. Railways and towns are marked across the country, and the Gulf of Mexico fills the right side of the sheet, with the southern edge of Texas lettered at the top. The Revillagigedo Islands appear in the Pacific at the lower left, and Guatemala and British Honduras at the lower right. The Gulf coast and the Pacific coast are fringed with soft blue tint.

This was the Mexico of the presidency of Porfirio Diaz, with an expanding railway network that the map records.
