About this piece
Three scenes from the voyages of exploration on a single sheet, original copper engravings published in London by Alex. Hogg at the King's Arms, Paternoster Row, dated 1790. Each scene has its own lettered caption.
At the top, "Mr. Banks receiving a Visit from the King of Duke of York's Island" shows a seated gathering beneath palm trees, with the naturalist Joseph Banks and his companions in conversation with islanders. In the middle, "View of a Perforated Rock in Tolago Bay" shows a natural arch in a wooded coastal rock, with a small boat visible through the opening. At the bottom, "View of a Town in the Island of Terra del Fuego" shows a settlement of beehive-shaped huts under tall trees, with a fire and seated figures at the left and a man standing in the foreground.
The three subjects come from the accounts of Captain Cook's first voyage, on which Banks sailed as naturalist. Only the last scene, Tierra del Fuego at the southern tip of South America, lies in the Americas.
