About this piece
Canada, an original steel-engraved decorative map of the western province, Upper Canada or Canada West, drawn and engraved by J. Rapkin and published by J. & F. Tallis, London, Edinburgh and Dublin, about 1850. The illustrations are credited to H. Warren and engraved by J. H. Rogers.
The map covers the peninsula between Lake Huron, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, with Georgian Bay, the Ottawa River and the St. Lawrence to the east. The districts are outlined in color and the roads and townships are drawn in fine detail, with the Indian Territory marked on the Bruce peninsula. At the lower right is a view of the Falls of Niagara, and the border carries a hunting scene on horseback at the upper left, a beaver at the upper right, and a group of Indigenous figures at the left of the map. The title "Canada" is lettered across the top of the floral border.
The Tallis vignettes here give the colonial view of the province: the Niagara Falls as its great sight, and the hunting and fur-trade scenes as the other familiar images of Canada at midcentury.
