About this piece

German emigrants clearing a farm in the American wilderness, a chromolithograph titled "Deutsche Ansiedelung in Amerika" (German Settlement in America) and numbered 21 at the top of the sheet. It dates from about 1890 and belongs to a numbered series of pictures for the German market.

On the left two men in shirtsleeves, one in a red shirt, swing axes at the foot of an enormous oak, while a dog drinks from a stream at their feet. In the center a rider in a broad-brimmed hat sits on a brown horse with a dead deer slung across the saddle, and at the right a farmer follows a team of two horses pulling a plow across a freshly turned strip of ground. A pointed-picket fence encloses a yard behind them where cows and pigs graze before a log cabin, and in the clearing beyond a few more figures work among felled logs and pines. A large tree stump fills the lower right corner.

The scene offers a romantic picture of the German settler on the frontier, one of a stream of images that spread the story of emigration to the United States.
