About this piece
Massachusetts at the start of the 1820s in an original engraved map titled "Geographical, Statistical, and Historical Map of Massachusetts", plate 12 of Carey and Lea's A Complete Historical, Chronological, and Geographical American Atlas, published in 1822. The map was designed by Fielding Lucas, Jr. and engraved by J. Yeager, and the counties are colored by hand.
The map shows the state from the New York border at the left to Cape Cod and the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket at the lower right, with Vermont and New Hampshire above and Connecticut and Rhode Island below. Towns are clustered along the navigable rivers and the long coastline, and postal roads link the farm towns of the interior. Historic battle sites are marked by small red flags, and several navigational hazards are marked in the Atlantic.
The bottom third of the sheet carries blocks of printed text on the geography, climate, rivers and canals, and political divisions of the state, together with a table of counties and population.
The atlas was issued in several editions between 1822 and 1827 and used a format of a map surrounded by text and statistical tables, a layout inspired by an earlier European atlas by Las Cases.
