About this piece
North American Indians, an original hand-colored engraving titled "Noord-Indianen", from De Mensch, zoo als hij voorkomt op den bekenden aardbol, the Dutch survey of the world's peoples written by Martinus Stuart and published in Amsterdam in the early nineteenth century (about 1803 to 1808). The drawing is credited "J. Kuyper del." at the lower left, and the plate was engraved by L. Portman.
A man stands at the center in a headdress of colored feathers, a blue breechcloth and leggings, with a necklace and a decorated knife at his chest, and gestures toward a distant point with one arm raised. At the right a woman in a long garment kneels beside a deer carcass, holding its antlers. At the left a small child clutches a fur and a hatchet. Behind them stand pine trees and a large thatched dwelling. The coloring is in buff, blue and red tones over the fine engraved line.
Like the other plates in the series, the scene was assembled from published travel accounts and earlier illustrations, not from observation, and it records the European picture of the peoples of the northern forests.
