About this piece
British North America, an original map from Lowry's Table Atlas, constructed and engraved from the most recent authorities, by J.W. Lowry, dated 1852. The sheet is printed in black with the borders of the British possessions outlined in orange, and carries the imprint of Chapman and Hall, London, at the foot.
The title is curved across the top of the sheet within the graticule of a conical projection. The map covers the whole of the British territory from the Pacific coast to Newfoundland: Hudson Bay and its great inlets, the Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence valley, the Maritime provinces, Labrador and the islands of the Arctic coast. The coastlines are lettered with dense small place names, headlands and bays. To the south the northern part of the United States is shown, with Oregon at the Pacific end, and Greenland and Baffin Bay appear at the upper right. An English-miles scale is printed at the top, and the atlas page number appears in the corner.
The sheet shows the country before Canadian Confederation in 1867.
