About this piece

British North America on a large single sheet, an original engraved map titled "British North America", published by Blackie & Son of Glasgow, Edinburgh and London, about 1860. The territorial and colonial boundaries are outlined in color by hand, and a plate number appears at the upper right.

The map reaches from Vancouver Island and the Pacific coast across the continent to Newfoundland and Labrador, and from the northern edge of the United States up through Hudson Bay and the islands of the Arctic Archipelago. Greenland appears at the upper right. The Canadas, the Maritime colonies, Rupert's Land and the western territories are all drawn, with rivers, lakes, ranges and the coastlines carefully lettered, and the northern shores are filled in with the names left by Arctic exploration.

The sheet dates from the years before Confederation in 1867, when British North America was still a group of separate colonies and chartered territories rather than one country. The 49th parallel marks the southern boundary on the western half of the map, and Alaska, then a Russian possession, lies beyond the northwest corner.
