About this piece
Canada, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, an original map from Lowry's Table Atlas, constructed and engraved from the most recent authorities, by J.W. Lowry, dated 1852. The subject is printed on two separate sheets, each in black with the waterways and boundary lines picked out in blue, and carries the imprint of Chapman and Hall, London.
The left sheet covers the lower Great Lakes region, with Lake Michigan, Lake Huron and Lake Ontario, the peninsula of the old province of Upper Canada, and the northern parts of Michigan and Wisconsin. The right sheet continues east down the St. Lawrence to the Gulf of St. Lawrence, covering Lower Canada, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Cape Breton and the Maine border, with Labrador to the north. The title "Canada, New Brunswick & Nova Scotia" is lettered at the lower right of the second sheet, with an English-miles scale. Towns, rivers, lakes and counties are named throughout.
The two sheets together show the Canadian provinces as they stood before Confederation in 1867.
