About this piece
Canada West and part of Canada East, an original engraved map published by Blackie & Son of Glasgow, Edinburgh and London, about 1860. The sheet is titled "Canada West, and part of Canada East", with its boundaries outlined in color by hand and a plate number at the upper right.
The map takes in the peninsula between Lakes Huron, Erie and Ontario, with Georgian Bay to the north and the St. Lawrence and Ottawa valleys running off to the east toward Montreal. Counties, towns, roads, canals and other routes are laid out closely over the settled lower peninsula, while the north is left nearly open, with only rivers and lakes. A lettered list of the counties of Canada West is printed at the left, with a smaller list for Canada East below it.
An inset at the upper left, "Environs of Montreal", gives a larger-scale view of the island and the country around the city. The sheet shows the united Province of Canada in the years before Confederation in 1867, when Canada West was the future Ontario and Canada East the future Quebec.
