About this piece
Southern South America in the middle of the nineteenth century, an original engraved map titled "La Plata. Chili. Paraguay, Uruguay & Patagonia", published about 1860 by Blackie & Son of Glasgow, Edinburgh and London. The outlines of the countries are colored by hand, and the sheet carries a plate number at the upper right.
The map runs from the Pacific coast of Chile across the Andes to the Atlantic, and from Bolivia in the north to the tip of the continent. The Río de la Plata and its tributaries are traced inland, with the boundaries of Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay and the territory marked "La Plata" outlined in color, and a wide region labeled Patagonia fills the south. Towns, rivers, mountain ranges and routes cross the interior, with the coastlines finely lettered.
A lower-right inset, "Continuation of Chili and Patagonia", extends the Chilean coast southward through the channels and islands of Tierra del Fuego, so that the whole of the Strait of Magellan region appears on one sheet. The use of "La Plata" for the Argentine territory reflects the usage of the time.
