About this piece
La Plata, Chili and Southern Brazil, an original engraved map of 1849 from Sharpe's Corresponding Atlas, engraved by J. Wilson Lowry and published in London by Chapman and Hall. The sheet carries the running head "Sharpe's Corresponding Maps" and the series note "Intermediate Series", with the title "La Plata, Chili and Southern Brazil" set in the open space of the Atlantic at lower right. Boundaries are outlined in hand color.
The map runs from the Pacific coast of Chili at the left, across the Andes and the pampas, to the Atlantic seaboard of Brazil at the right, and from Patagonia and the Strait region at the bottom northward to Mato Grosso. Rivers are drawn in great detail, including the Parana, Paraguay and Uruguay draining toward the estuary of the Rio de la Plata, and towns, missions and mountain ranges of the interior are named. The coast of southern Brazil is lined with ports and place names. Two scales are given beneath the title, in English miles and Spanish leagues.
