About this piece
Eastern Canada and New England, titled "Partie Orientale de la Nouvelle France ou du Canada," made after the French naval engineer Jacques Nicolas Bellin and published by the Homann Heirs in Nuremberg about 1755. The sheet is an engraved map with outline color in yellow and green.
The map extends from Lake Ontario, the St. Lawrence River and Cape Cod in the south to Hudson Bay, "Cap Rond" and Newfoundland in the northeast. The Gulf of St. Lawrence ("Golfe de St. Laurent") sits at the center, with Anticosti, the Magdalen Islands, Cape Breton, and the peninsula of Acadia and Nova Scotia all drawn. Newfoundland ("Terre-Neuve") appears at the right with its bays, and the Grand Banks lie to the south. Labrador, the "Pays des Esquimaux" and several Indigenous nations are lettered across the north. A rococo cartouche at the lower right carries the title, with Bellin's name and the date 1755.
The map shows the French view of the St. Lawrence country at the moment of the final conflict between France and Britain over Canada.
