About this piece
North America on a full-sheet map from Black's General Atlas of the World, published by A. & C. Black in 1870. The map is engraved and colored by country, with the title "North America" lettered at lower left above the scales.
The whole continent is shown in a single view, with Greenland at upper right and the Arctic islands across the top. British America fills the northern half in pink, with Hudson Bay a large pale basin at its center, and the United States forms a broad yellow band across the middle, from the Atlantic to the Pacific, with the Great Lakes on its northern edge. Alaska is drawn at the far upper left, Mexico is tinted green, Central America is shown in orange and pink at lower right, and Cuba, Hispaniola and the other Caribbean islands are included at lower right. Lines of latitude and longitude curve across the oceans.
The map shows the continent as it was drawn only a few years after the United States acquired Alaska and just before the Canadian provinces extended westward to the Pacific.
