About this piece
North America, an original map published by Blackie & Son of Glasgow, Edinburgh and London for their Imperial Atlas of Modern Geography, dated 1882. The title "North America" is engraved at the lower left with two scales of English and geographical miles beneath it, and the publisher's imprint is printed at the foot.
The sheet covers the whole continent, from Greenland and the Arctic archipelago at the top to Central America and the northern tip of South America at the bottom, with Alaska at the upper left and the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans filling the margins. Outline color distinguishes the British possessions, shown in pink, the United States and Mexico in other tints, with the border between the United States and Canada printed as a strong line. The map shows Hudson Bay, the Great Lakes, the Gulf of Mexico and the West Indies with Cuba clear at the right, and the Rocky Mountains and the Mississippi system are drawn with fine hachures.
The sheet gives the continent as it was known to Victorian map readers.
