About this piece
North America and the West Indies on a map titled "Nord-America", from Stielers Handatlas, published by Justus Perthes in Gotha around 1859. The sheet is an engraving with outline color, drawn by F. von Stulpnagel.
The map covers the continent from the Bering Sea to the Caribbean, with Greenland at the upper right, Hudson Bay at the center of the north, and the island groups of the West Indies lettered "West-Indien" and "Caribisches Meer" in the southeast. Colored lines mark the divisions of British North America, the United States and Mexico, and the British overseas territories, among them Rupert's Land, Canada, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, are keyed and listed in the lower margin. Smaller keys name the states of New England and the principal rivers and lakes. Alaska appears at the upper left as Russian America, and the Isthmus of Panama and Central America close the map in the south.
Stielers Handatlas (after Adolf Stieler, 1775 to 1836), formally titled Hand-Atlas uber alle Theile der Erde und uber das Weltgebaude, was the leading German world atlas of the last three decades of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth. Published by Justus Perthes of Gotha, it went through ten editions from 1816 to 1945.
