About this piece
North America with a vignette of the Statue of Liberty, an original antique map titled "Amerique du Nord", published in Paris by J. Migeon around 1875. The map is a hand-colored engraving with the countries tinted in blue, pink and yellow within a yellow border.
The sheet shows the continent from Alaska and Greenland to the Isthmus of Panama, with the United States in blue-green, Canada and the Hudson Bay territories in pink, and Mexico and Central America in yellow and buff. The railroad system of the United States and Canada is shown in considerable detail, and the old description notes meticulous information from the new Alaska Territory down through the Windward Islands of the Caribbean. An oval vignette at the lower left, titled "Entree du Port de New-York", shows the harbor with the Statue of Liberty on its island and ships in the water.
J. Migeon was a late nineteenth century map publisher based in Paris, France. The statue was dedicated in 1886, which suggests that the sheet was issued somewhat later than the circa 1875 given in the date.
