About this piece
Peru and the Amazon region in an original copperplate-engraved map by Herman Moll, from A System of Geography, published in London around 1709. The sheet is printed in black and white with no color, and carries a page number, "290", and the running chapter heading "Chap. XIII. Of the Kingdom of Peru" above the map.
The map shows the west coast of South America under "The South Sea" and "Pacific Sea", with the Andes, the colonial divisions labeled "Audience of Quito", "Audience of Lima" and "Audience of Charcas", and the Amazon system spread across the interior as a web of rivers. Large areas are marked "Part of Terra Firma", "Part of La Plata" and "Part of Brasil", and the Amazon basin is lettered "The Land of the Amazones, Little Known". The title cartouche at the lower right reads "Peru and the Amazones Country. H. Moll Fecit". An inset at the lower left shows "The Gallapagos Islands".
Below the map, two columns of descriptive text on the geography and climate of Peru continue the printed page. Moll was one of the leading London mapmakers of his day.
