About this piece
Peru and Upper Peru, titled "Carte du Pérou et du Haut Pérou", an original engraving with hand outline color from the Atlas universel de géographie ancienne et moderne by Pierre M. Lapie and his son Alexandre Émile Lapie. The title block gives the place and date as Paris, 1842.
The map shows the Pacific coast of South America from Ecuador (lettered "Équateur") south to the Atacama region, with the Andes drawn in fine hachures and the coast crowded with small place names. Peru, Bolivia and the Brazilian interior are tinted in soft pink and yellow outlines, with rivers of the Amazon system running across the eastern half of the sheet and Mato Grosso named at the right. The Pacific is lettered "Grand Océan" and "Mer du Sud ou Océan Pacifique", the Tropic of Capricorn is marked, and a bar of scales appears at the lower right. A decorative double border frames the whole sheet.
The Lapie atlas was a standard French reference of its time, and its sheets were known for their clear engraving and well-organized topography.
