About this piece
Peru and the coast of the Pacific, titled "Peru" in a decorative cartouche, an original engraved map published by W. Blaeu of Amsterdam, circa 1645. The sheet carries original hand color in green, blue, pink and yellow, with a colored border.
The ornate strapwork title cartouche stands at the upper left. The coast runs diagonally from the upper right to the lower left, with the Pacific lettered "Mar del Zur" across the open water, where three sailing ships, two sea-monsters and a compass rose with lines of rhumb radiating from it fill the empty sea. Along the left edge the "Linea Aequinoctialis" is marked and the Tropic of Capricorn at the right. The Andes are drawn in profile across the interior, with rivers and lakes picked out at the top, and towns and provinces are named across the sheet, among them Pacamores, Moias and Mana. The Amsterdam imprint of Blaeu is lettered at the lower right.
Blaeu's maps of the New World were standard reference sheets in the Dutch atlases of the seventeenth century.
