About this piece
The southern tip of South America in the Dutch edition of Captain Cook's voyage account, "Kaart van het Zuidlyk Eind van Amerika," dated 1775 in the title. The engraved sheet carries a plate number at the upper right, with the track of the voyage drawn in dotted lines and outline color along the coasts.
The map shows Patagonia and Chile at the left, the Strait of Magellan and the broken island coast of Tierra del Fuego ("Terra del Fuego of het Vuurland") along the lower left, and the Falkland Islands ("Falklands Eilanden") in pink at the right. Soundings are marked along the coast, bays and capes are lettered, and a compass rose with radiating lines stands at the center. An inset at the lower right shows "Nieuw Jaars Eil.," the New Year's Islands, beside Staten Land.
The map concentrates on Cook's tracks around Cape Horn and Tierra del Fuego in 1775, as recorded on his second voyage, and comes from a Dutch translation of the official account of the expedition.
