About this piece
South America, Southern Sheet, from the Royal Atlas of Modern Geography, published by W. and A.K. Johnston in Edinburgh and London in 1909. The sheet is an original engraving printed in color, showing the southern part of the continent at a large scale, with the title and scale lettering set at the lower right.
The map covers Chile and Argentina, southern Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Bolivia, with Patagonia running down to Tierra del Fuego and Cape Horn. The provinces and territories are outlined in color, the Andes are drawn in hachures, and railways and ports are marked along the coasts. Out in the South Atlantic lie the Falkland Islands and South Georgia. Three insets show city plans: Valparaiso, with a small map of the bay, at the lower left, and Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires at the upper right.
The Johnston firm of Edinburgh was one of the leading British makers of atlases, and its large sheets are admired for their clean, detailed engraving.
