About this piece
South America, an original engraved map titled "Carte Generale de l'Amerique Meridionale", from the Atlas universel de geographie ancienne et moderne by Pierre M. Lapie and Alexandre E. Lapie, printed at Paris and dated 1842 in the title block. The borders and the outlines of the countries are colored by hand in soft pastel tints.
The map shows the whole continent from the Caribbean coast to Tierra del Fuego, with the Atlantic lettered "Ocean Atlantique" and "Ocean Atlantique Austral" along the east and the Pacific as "Grand Ocean Austral" on the west. Rivers, mountain ranges and a dense network of place names fill the interior, and the Falkland Islands appear off the southern coast. The title, a decorative script block, sits at the upper right, with a scale of distances in a small panel at the lower right. A graduated frame with longitude counted from the Paris meridian surrounds the sheet.
Pierre M. Lapie was a French cartographer and engraver, and his son Alexandre Emile Lapie worked with him on the atlas.
