About this piece
South America in a mid-nineteenth century Dutch school atlas, titled "Zuid-Amerika", from Otto Petri's School-Atlas van alle deelen der Aarde, published in Rotterdam by A. Baedeker in 1852. The map is a lithograph with outline color.
The title is set in a small framed block at the lower left, with the imprint "Rotterdam, bij A. Baedeker (Otto Petri)" and a scale of geographical miles. The continent is drawn with its republics and Brazil outlined in several colors, the Caribbean at the top is lettered "Caraïbische Zee", and the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans are named at the sides. Tables at the right and lower right list the departments and provinces of the larger states by number, keyed to numerals on the map, and a short list of abbreviations stands at the upper right. The Falkland Islands and a bit of Tierra del Fuego appear at the southern tip.
The sheet gives a clear picture of the political divisions of South America as taught in Dutch schools around 1850.
