About this piece
South America on J. Wyld's folding wall map "Colombia Prima or South America," drawn from the large map in eight sheets by Louis Stanislas D'Arcy de la Rochette, published in London, circa 1850. The sheet is laid out in sections for folding, and the title is lettered in the cartouche at the lower right.
The map shows the continent with its states outlined in color, from Colombia and the Guianas to Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, the United Provinces and Patagonia, with the rivers, mountain ranges and coast named in detail. The Andes are drawn in hachured relief down the western side. Three insets in the lower portion present data from Humboldt's report in the form of topographical profiles: "Section of the Andes," "Section of South America from West to East," and "Section of the Road from La Guayra to Caracas." A comparative distance table and an index, "Civil Divisions, Population and Extent," list Colombia, Peru, the United Provinces, Chile, Patagonia, Brazil and the Guianas.
James Wyld was one of the leading London map publishers of the mid-nineteenth century, and the sheet combines a political survey of the new South American republics with scientific profiles from the explorations of Alexander von Humboldt.
