About this piece
North America from Stieler's Hand-Atlas, published by Justus Perthes of Gotha in 1879. The sheet is lettered "Nord-America. Entworfen u. gezeichnet von F. von Stülpnagel", is numbered "Stieler's Hand-Atlas No. 79", and carries the imprint "Gotha: Justus Perthes". It is an engraved map with hand-applied outline color.
The map covers the whole continent, from Alaska and the Aleutians in the northwest to Greenland in the northeast, and south through Mexico and Central America to the northern coast of South America. Hudson Bay and the Great Lakes are drawn, the United States and Canada are divided by colored boundary lines, and the West Indies are lettered "West Indien" and "Caraibisches Meer", with the Bahamas to the north. A numbered key at the right lists the New England states and Maryland, and a note at lower right explains the colors used for the European colonies. The scale bar and degree grid sit below the title in the lower left.
The sheet is a good document of how a German atlas drew North America a decade after Alaska passed to the United States.
