About this piece
A woman of Araucania in Chile, an original hand-colored print dated 1843, from the Histoire Naturelle de l'Homme comprenant des recherches sur l'influence des agens physiques et moraux (..) by J. C. Prichard. The title "Araucanien (Chili)" is lettered beneath the portrait, and the engraver's signature appears at the lower right of the image.
The portrait is a bust view, showing the sitter facing forward with long dark hair parted at the center. She wears a woven garment with a patterned collar and a broad border of diamond and stripe designs in green and red, and the face is tinted warm brown with touches of red on the lips. The background is left blank, in the manner of the ethnographic plates of the period.
The Araucanians, or Mapuche, lived in the south of Chile, and the plate belongs to a series in Prichard's book that set out the different peoples of the world as types, a common approach in the ethnology of the 1840s.
