About this piece

Eingeborne von Peru, Habitans de Perou, an original lithograph of c.1845 from Heinrich Rudolf Schinz's Naturgeschichte und Abbildungen des Menschen der verschiedenen Rassen und Stämme, lettered "No. 35 b" at the top and signed "Lith. v. J. Honegger" at the lower right. The sheet is printed in black on a creamy paper, with the title in German and French beneath.

Four head and shoulders portraits are arranged in two rows on the plate. At the upper left a young woman is shown with a long braid hanging over her shoulder, and the figure at the lower left shows a man in profile with his hair gathered in a braid. The two figures at the right face the viewer directly, and both wear crosses suspended on cords around their necks. The subjects wear plain dark tunics, and the faces are drawn in careful tonal gradations typical of the early lithographic work in natural history.

Heinrich Rudolf Schinz (1777 to 1861) was a Swiss physician and naturalist and became professor of natural history at the University of Zurich in 1833. His book classified the peoples of the world according to the scientific ideas of the time.
